Best of 2016
(in no particular order)
Love Warrior – Glennon Doyle Melton
It usually takes me about a month to read a book – I finished this one in three days, and I was mad when I finished because I didn’t want it to end. Read if you’re a human.
Rising Strong – Brené Brown
A guide to feeling your way through pain and failure. I had a few bumps this year and this book helped and supported me more than I can even explain. I’ve listened to the audiobook three times this year. Read if you’re going through some stuff.
Letters from a Stoic – Seneca
The parallels between this ancient philosophy and current research on learning and development absolutely BLOW MY MIND. If you feel like making a jump into stoicism (which I highly recommend) I would say start with The Obstacle is the Way (listed below) and then dig into this bad boy right here! Read if you’re ready to change the way you look at challenges.
Creativity Inc – Ed Catmull
One of the best books I’ve ever seen on how to lead, organize, and empower your people. Read if you’re in any type of leadership role.
The War of Art – Steven Pressfield
This book really takes an in-depth look into the fear and resistance that holds us back. In short: this is why you avoid doing the things that you know are good for you… and this is how to get over that. It’s an absolute kick in the butt, and you’ll love it. Read if you’re having trouble starting.
Self Renewal – John Gardner
Gardner talks about the importance of challenges, mistakes, and struggle – and how these things are the key ingredients to growth and innovation. Basically a blueprint to growth mindset but decades before mindset was a thing. Read if you’re ready to change the way you look at learning.
The Obstacle is the Way – Ryan Holiday
Epic. Easy to read. An incredible introduction into stoicism and how to turn obstacles into opportunities. Read if you’re a human.
Presence – Amy Cuddy
The research behind personal power and presence will blow you away. Amy explains the nudges and hacks that can help you be the best version of you when it matters most. Read if you want to bring more personal power to your arena.
Brain Rules – John Medina
The research and science behind learning and development. Read if you’re ready to geek out on your brain and how awesome it is.
